Get excited for work again

The next step is just that - the next step.

Every step on your journey to being an entrepreneur can feel good and true to you.

A job change could be just what you need

Don’t assume you aren’t ready for a change just because you don’t know whether you want another job or to start a business. It’s ok to know you want to start a business and not rip the bandaid on your 9-5. A job can be great to work on you business idea while developing skills, saving money, testing ideas and other useful preparations. Shift the decision from an either-or of stating in a job or starting a business to answering what you want right now? And what’s a change that would give you more of what you want?

Before even looking at potential new jobs, you may feel weighed down by the idea. Yes, moving slow means something. It could be as simple as you’re tired and it feels like more effort than you have to wade through endless listings online, doing applications and going on interviews. It could be that you have bad memories of past job searches or friend’s job searches that were overwhelming, frustrating and even confusing. It could be the uncertainty of a new job that feels like more than you want to take on right now.

Lighten your decision

Lighten the decision by focusing it on what you want today. This step is just the next step. This step is needed to get to the next step.

Keep self-reflection simple

Why this works:

  • Stop the spinning - Put your thoughts and feelings to paper in an organized format to. Putting them to paper in even a simplified form organizes your thoughts and feelings so that you can breathe and take a step forward.

  • Simplify the process - This simplifies the reflection process of understanding how you are feeling and where you head is at today. No twenty questions. No deep analysis of every option. Detailed analysis of options should be focused on just a couple of serious considerations. At this stage, you just need to quiet all the noise and clear the clutter.

  • Focus your direction and get momentum - This will clarify areas that you want to look into more. This isn’t about making a big decision today like deciding on the exact job you should go after next. This is about organizing your thoughts just enough that you can remove some ideas and choose a focus forward. A focus can include a few options/areas/ideas/etc.

Consistency is key

You don’t start with the answer. The answer comes. The answer is also temporary. The job, the company, the industry, employee vs. entrepreneur - will change. Whether it is working for someone else or for yourself, you can fulfill your needs today. This step can be one step on your entrepreneurial journey.
